E-Cigarettes Touted As Safer Smoking Alternative Some say that smoking in any form is dangerous, while others say electronic smoking is at least safer than true tobacco. There has been no long-term study that can definitively say one way or the other. But the makers of White Cloud Electronic Cigarettes say if you're going to smoke, their product is safer, and they don't sell to kids. "There's no second-hand smoke around the kids. Your car doesn't smell. There are no ashes or cigarette butts. Your clothes don't stink," Camera Bartolotta said. Channel 4 Action News anchor Wendy Bell said electronic cigarettes have been around since 2006, billed as a safer alternative to tobacco. Despite e-cigarettes' clean claims, the FDA said they contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals like diethylene glycol -- an ingredient found in antifreeze that creates the vaporizing agent behind the so-called smoke.Use e liquid to instead of the tobacco cigarette so that you can keep your health. Bartolotta said her White Cloud e-cigarettes are different because the vaporizing agent, propylene glycol, is FDA-approved. "She exhales, no smell, no smoke. It's just water. That's it," Bartolotta said. "And it dissipates. You can't set off a smoke alarm with one of these if you blow it directly into one." It's the nicotine that's inhaled by the user in the form of water vapor. But their allure is in their cleanliness. "They have different levels of nicotine in them, so if what you're really addicted to is the physical part of it, you get the physical fix, you get a little of the nicotine fix, but you can step down to having no nicotine whatsoever," Bartolotta said. That nicotine is what federal regulators take umbrage with -- as well as the host of electronic cigarette flavors that reportedly draw children in -- as the FDA says it is "concerned about the safety of these products and how they are marketed to the public." Bell said the e-cigarettes are sold in mall kiosks across the Pittsburgh area, and Pennsylvania is considering legislation that would prohibit selling them to anyone under the age of 18.
